Suffering from Tech Neck? Chiropractic Care Can Help

There’s no doubt that smartphones, tablets, and computers are handy and play a vital part of most of our lives, but they can be a real pain in the neck too. When using these devices, there is a tendency to hold the head flexed forward and looking down, which puts pressure on the cervical spine (i.e. the neck). Over time this can lead to muscle strain, disc injuries, and compressed nerves. The act of holding our heads forward in this position and the resulting discomforts has come to be called “tech neck” or “text neck” because it is so commonly the result of the overuse of handheld devices. In chiropractic terms we call it “forward head posture” and, although very common, the good news is that it’s also very treatable.

Signs of Tech Neck

Forward head posture positions the head forward of the shoulders, which puts excess strain and stress on the neck and head muscles. The human head averages 8-10 pounds in weight. With proper posture the full weight of the head is supported by the entire spine but for every inch the head moves forward, the neck has to endure 10 additional pounds of weight and it has to do it without the full support of the spine. If the head is held in this position repeatedly it can result in chronic pain and discomfort.

Common signs of tech neck include:

  • Ongoing neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • Pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates down the arm
  • Stiffness or tenderness in the neck, shoulders, and upper torso

Unity Chiropractic Can Help Counteract Tech Neck

If you use handheld devices a lot, do not pay attention to your posture when using them, and are experiencing any of these symptoms, chances are you’re suffering from Tech Neck. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve your symptoms by restoring spinal positioning. Once the neck and spine are properly realigned, muscles relax, tension dissipates, nerve compression eases, and freedom of movement is restored. As your head is returned to a neutral position, your symptoms will subside discomfort will fade away.

Whether you call it Tech neck, Text Neck, or forward head posture, it can be fixed. Contact Unity Chiropractic for an examination and to find relief. Call 615-920-4550 or schedule an appointment online to start feeling better!
